One of the cool things about Vibe With Ade is I’m getting to connect with a lot of new and up-and-coming artists. Whether they’re sending me their new releases or asking for feedback. I am ALWAYS available to any new artists. I love being able to support the awesome talent I see coming through. WizG reached out to me about a potential interview and I was ecstatic. I felt this was such a new and exciting route for Vibe With Ade to go into. By giving more exposure to those up-and-comers. Enjoy my first interview and get to learn more about Kostas and Josh who created WizG.
Give me a general run-down of who WizG is, the inspiration behind the name and your music
Kostas: WizG is a combination our two last names Wizan and Garcia”
Josh: WizG represents a side of who we are as people, but in music form. Fun, energetic, lively and wild. We want people to associate our music and the name ‘WizG’ with allowing themselves to let loose for a night, dance and have fun.
Did either of you have any previous musical background (i.e. playing any instruments prior)?
Kostas: Besides the recorder in 3rd grade? Surprisingly, no.
Josh: Kostas and I had no previous musical background before producing music. We grew up playing sports. Baseball and Basketball were our two passions before music. It wasn’t until our senior year of college that we started to teach ourselves music theory and how to play the piano. I started taking piano lessons my senior year at San Diego State University from one of the students in the music department and read a book called “Hook Theory”.
I read that when you both went to Coachella in 2013 that sparked this musical journey you decided to go on, was there a specific artist/set that transpired this? Did you feel the right time to work and release this was after graduating from college?
Josh: I remember it like it was yesterday. Kostas and I were watching Hardwell perform in the Sahara tent with our friends. This was our first time seeing EDM performed at a festival, which left a seriously lasting impression on us. We thought if we could ever make music that has an effect on people like Hardwell’s music did on us, it would be an amazing and gratifying feeling, and essentially what transpired us to start making music.
Kostas: As far as the right time to work together, we thought to get the best results and put our best foot forward was to form WizG after we graduated college. It was tough being across the country from each other and trying to collaborate. While we would sometimes go back and forth sending each other ideas, we mostly spent our senior year learning the software and music theory. We work the best when we’re together in the same room, bouncing ideas off of each other.
When trying to find your sound, did you experiment with multiple genres? What felt right about the current sound you’re producing?
Josh: Honestly, no. While of course we are fans of different genres of music, it was the feeling we got when we listened to Progressive House that made us want to start making music in the first place. We love the combination of uplifting lyrics, epic drops, and overall euphoric sensation you get when listening to Progressive House. We wanted the music we make to not only get the crowd jumping up and down, but also have our songs tell a story.
Who would be your dream collaboration?
WizG: While we would love to collab with so many of our inspirations, our dream collaboration would have to be with:
-
Kostas: Pharrell without a doubt. Even though he doesn’t produce EDM, everything he puts out is a banger. He’s continuously pushing the envelope and innovating when it comes to sound. I would love to see his creative process first hand and see what we could create together.
-
Josh: Tiesto would have to be mind. He’s one of the O.G.s of EDM and his musical talent spreads throughout multiple genres.
What can we expect to come for WizG that’s coming down the pipeline? More singles, mixes, any upcoming shows?
Josh: This year our goal is to release as much content as possible. Our plan is to release a song a month and hopefully have an EP out by summer. We have a remix coming out next month in March and three singles already in the works to follow
Kostas: As for shows we hope to be performing very soon. Right now for us it’s all about building up the catalogue and following. We know the shows will come
Last one that’s a fun one: since VWA is a music & festival blog, I’m curious to know: what is your favorite festival you have been to and why? What would be your dream festival to play at?
Kostas: I think we both can agree our favorite festival and dream festival to play at would have to be Coachella. It would make everything come full circle.
Josh: Coachella for us is like Disneyland. We feel it’s the happiest place on earth. Everyone is always so friendly and just wanting to have fun. We try and go every year. Coachella is where we fell in love with Dance music and it would be an honor and a blessing to perform one year.
